Day 1 Of The Luxury Design and Craftsmanship Summit 2018

We have been very excited about this Design and Craftsmanship Summit developed by Covet Group aiming to celebrate the hands that create art. After introducing Brhand Foundation to the world, Covet Group focused on honoring the prestige of ancient arts and crafts, by bringing together the oldest crafting techniques and contemporary designers! The first day of this one of a kind event presented a lively debate were some of the most important names on the Design and Art in Portugal shared their experiences and how they became successful in their own journey. The attendees had the opportunity to be surrounded by live handcrafted work, that are the result of pure dedication and meticulously daily effort and years of experience.

The luxurious panel is composed by Nicole Segundo, from the Michelangelo Foundation, Fatima Santos, from Associação de Ourivesaria e Relojoaria Portuguesa, the Portuguese Fashion Designer Luís Onofre and António Moura, an important developer in the luxury field. Moderated by the Covet Group’s CEO, Amândio Pereira, this panel aims to trailblazer the path to tomorrow’s luxury design business.

METAL CASTING
The art of casting metals into a chosen shape and size. The process starts by melting metal into a liquid, pouring it in a mould with a cavity of the desired shape, and removing the material, or casting after the final work gets cool and then solidified. The solidified part can be ejected or even broken out of the mould. This technique is one of the most used for making intricate forms that would be difficult to have from other methods.

LEAF GILDING

The term gilding covers a number of decorative techniques for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces such as wood, stone, or metal to give a thin coating of gold. Nowadays it is used to create and decorate unique design pieces.

ARRAIOLOS

Arraiolos rug, embroidered floor covering made at Arraiolos, north of Évora in Portugal. The technique is a form of crosstitch that completely covers the linen cloth foundation. Today, most rugs are made as a cottage industry by the women of Arraiolos.

MARQUETRY

One of the oldest arts of humankind, the art of making sculptured ornaments in a wooden object creates undeniable beauty forms and shapes. From its natural look and textures to highly polished and colored versions, wood has always been easily accessible and relatively easy to manipulate, attracting the interest of artists and designers over the years.

AZULEJO

One of the most representative art forms of the Portuguese cultural heritage. The renowned blue hand-painted tiles reflect a tradition used for hundreds of years. Azulejo is usually a clay or ceramic plate piece, generally with a square shape decorated with glazed colorful designs, and repeated hundreds to a few thousand times.

FILIGREE

A delicate kind of jewellery metalwork. There is a new generation of artisans and designers who are dedicated to creating beautiful pieces of jewellery that combine contemporary design with the ancient art of filigree.
