One of Cheshire’s leading names in the bar and pub industry, New Moon Company, has teamed up with Warrington based DV8 Designs to transform The Old Blind School in Liverpool into a contemporary gastro-pub. The eatery and bar has recently opened its doors to the public following an impressive creative overhaul carried out by MD of DV8 Designs Lee Birchall and his specialist team of interior designers.
Built between 1851 and 1931, the venue once acted as the city’s School for the Blind until the organisation moved outside of the city centre in the 1950s. It then served as the Merseyside Police headquarters, the Merseyside Trade Union, Community and Unemployed Resource Centre and also the Flying Picket music venue, before closing its doors in 2004.
Lee said: “Having worked with New Moon Company numerous times before, it’s great to continue the longevity of our partnership and be a part of such innovative projects.
“As an iconic building, it was important that the venue remained true to its roots in many ways, therefore we kept many of the building’s original architectural elements, while adding a contemporary flair to the design and completely bringing it back to life.
“In order to perfectly counterbalance both heritage and current trends, we’ve added many ultra-modern decors, including visually exciting art installations and exaggerated furnishings to the restaurant floor. We also carried out an overhaul of the bar and 70-seat terrace area in line with the playful interior design throughout the property. The overall aim was to create a look that perfectly mirrors the venue’s laid-back ethos and relaxed atmosphere and capture its quirky vibe.”
As part of the renovation, the impressive venue’s restaurant floor and bar area have been completely redesigned to offer a ‘stripped-back rustic edge’, likewise a state-of-the-art open kitchen and bar area have also been installed. The Old Blind School is New Moon Company’s seventh venture. The Grade II listed building, located on Hardman Street, boasts two floors and a capacity of 280. In true gastro-pub style, the venue serves a range of classic British dishes including mature beef burgers, smoked haddock fillets and squash and chestnut crumble, alongside an extensive and impressive beer and cocktail menu.
Dave Mooney Owner of The New Moon Company added: “We love working with DV8 Designs, as Lee and the team really understand our unique visions and are able to bring our ideas to life while offering their forward-thinking creative direction. “As our first Liverpool establishment, we hope to receive a great response from the public due to our speciality gastro dishes, extensive drinks list and imaginative design.”
