With ‘circle’, Cheng-Tsung Feng, a Taiwanese young designer, reveals how traditional bamboo craftsmanship can be transformed into modern design. Presented at Maison et Objet 2015, ‘circle’ is a hand-made and self-standing mirror that uses moso bamboo for its whole structure. The wood tube acts as the bottom support and from it, two stripes of the same material surround and hold the mirror.
‘circle’ uses bamboo’s strength and flexibility to achieve a clean and contemporary design while processing it with classic heat molding methods. The principal feature of this product is the special shape that has been carved into the tube that not only prevents the bamboo from breaking, but also gives an elegant appearance while holding the mirror. Additionally, this cut creates a hole in the cylinder ideal for storing little pieces of jewelry like rings and pendants. The back of the mirror is covered in a bamboo silk-pattern, showcasing the medium’s different uses and finishes.
