Leading Hotels of the World – Granbell Hotel Shibuya – News & Events by BRABBU DESIGN FORCES

Today, we start a new rubric on BRABBU’s News Page, the interior design of the leading hotels of the world. And for the first article, we picked up the project by YOY Design Studio at the Granbell Hotel Shibuy, in Japan.

YOY’s latest project is a renovation of the Granbell Hotel Shibuya which commenced in 2006 in collaboration with UDS. The renovation of 54 rooms including 3 suite rooms and a public area were based on the concept of fusing art and function. YOY designed each room along 5 different design themes.

The Room of Light is the largest suite room in this hotel. At first glance the room looks like any ordinary hotel room but once the lighting is turned on the room comes alive with light playing the role of normal hotel decorations including light headboards, light flowers, light vases and light clocks.

The Room of Canvas is a maisonette suite room with a high ceiling. YOY incorporated a number of canvas frames with various drawings such as a chair, a lamp, a closet, a clock, etc. The unique selling point of this design was that whatever was drawn on the canvas was related to the function of it – thus a picture of a wardrobe can be opened and a picture of a chair can be sat on.

The Room of Drawer is another maisonette suite room with a large window. YOY designed a wall covered with a number of drawers with various functions such as a lamp, a bed, a shelf, etc.

The Room of Lighting Curtain is a twin room with a high ceiling. YOY designed a large curtain with a function of chandelier by putting LED light bulb in it. Also we put lamps and picture frames designed like a poster on the wall.

The Room of Poster is the main design for the other rooms in the hotel. In these rooms YOY utilised colourful lamps and picture frames designed to look like a poster on the wall.

For the entrance YOY utilised their innovative ‘embroidered signage – a collaboration with K’s Design. The signs appear as if they are hand sewn adding a warm and welcoming design note to the foyer.
