New York-based photographer John Chee will launch his new photography book My Father’s Kowloon City at a free event at Stones Houses this Saturday. Once a historical landmark, the venue was recently re-purposed by the Hong Kong government as a tourist and heritage centre.
Chee grew up in Kowloon City and left Hong Kong around two decades ago. He returned to capture family stone houses and the last walled village of Kowloon, which face elimination.
He now lives with his wife in New York City and is a member of the National Press Photographers Association and the Camera Club of New York.
“Illuminating Hong Kong’s tenacious energy known as the ‘Lion Rock Spirit’, My Father’s Kowloon City is an evocative tribute to the city and its people, the local pride and growing pains.”
Twenty images are set to be exhibited.
Stone Houses is located at 133 Junction Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The gallery is open to public for free from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily between March 26 and April 3, 2016. An opening reception and book launch event will be held at Stone Houses at 4:00pm on March 26, 2016, Saturday.
