CULTURE is a place where artisans, plastic artists, and designers meet up and keep alive the spirit of experimentation, by challenging the traditional concepts of the finest Craftsmanship and bringing to life unexpected and remarkable creations with a forward-thinking aesthetic. These three stools will be featured on BRABBU’s stand at this January Edition of Maison et Objet.
Mabela is a creative stool covered with intricate handcrafted straw patterns that evoke ancestral times in Africa. This ancient technique is impressively modified to fit the contemporary design of the piece. Straw Work is a tradition born in Africa, brought to us from the delicate and experienced hands of Master Dora, who interlaces threads to create wonderful webs. Innumerous threads were needed to finish this art piece and coat the stool.
Autumn is a beautiful wooden stool that not only reminds us the importance of preserving ancient arts, like marquetry, using them in contemporary design, but also evokes the passing of time and seasons with its falling warm-colored leaves hand placed one by one. Autumn stool was produced over two months of hard work using the ancient marquetry technique.
This technique involves drawing and cutting thin wood plates, coloring and burning them. Then these wood plates are carefully placed to create the final pattern. Leaf elements were drawn in wood, cut, sculpted and then applied on the stool creating patterns able to cover the entire object. The final result was reached after the handmade application of shellac varnish, by using a cotton or linen ball soaked in the natural varnish.
Evoking the origins of mankind, Wood Metamorphosis is a wooden stool that brings back the ancestral wood carving technique to shape elements of the natural world as decorative patterns in contemporary design. Wood Carving is a technique with a strong tradition in Portugal. Wood Metamorphosis was conceived and sculpted thanks to the genial and talented master Júlio Leal. With wood as base, the pattern of the wood carving gradually starts to appear thanks to the detailed handmade work of the master artisan. This stool has a naturalistic inspiration, as we can confirm in the natural material used with carving as its only transformation.
Side Table Countess d’Elba, D. Fernando Chair and the Black Forest Mirror will be other products by CULTURE featured on the trade show. Stay tuned for more!
