One of her most recent projects was the renovation of a 16th-century luxury Scottish castle. Forter Castle‘s history is one of drama and violence, reflecting the power struggles and ever-switching affiliations of the Scottish Clan system.

It was burnt to the ground in 1639, but recently painstakingly rebuilt to mirror the original layout. Katharine Pooley oversaw the interior design with some complications to overcome with imaginative thought!

Large pieces such as 4 poster beds and the grand dining table had to be sawn into pieces and reassembled in place as the fortification made access a complete nightmare – spiral staircases and tiny windows are perfect for defensive manoeuvres but terrific for enabling the installation of super king beds, free-standing baths and wrought iron and staghorn chandeliers as in the plush Master bedroom!

The soft furnishings come from a combination of local mills and European luxury linen suppliers and each room has its own feel and character as well as its own different view to the Scottish mountains.
