Being a lover of arts since young age, Charles Zana is a passionate french designer and architect who combines art and technique in every one of his projects. From Paris to London, via Gstaad, Tel Aviv and Monaco, Zana’s style and expertise are showcased in some of the world’s most beautiful public and private interiors. A house in the chic Parisian suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine is a perfect case in point.
Zana designs the best spaces for his clients by establishing systems of habitation that they can easily appropriate. His interiors are structured around people, taking every aspect of their lives into account, and he never imposes a style. In this midcentury house in the suburbs of Paris, it was no different.
The original three-story dwelling dates from the ’50s and the inspiration for the renovation came from the modernist buildings of Robert Mallet-Stevens, famous for his unornamented geometric façades. Much of the furniture was made specifically for the residence. Now belonging to a fashion-industry couple with four grown children, the property contains an assortment of blue-chip contemporary artworks.
The dining room’s Martin Szekely table was equipped with a brass base to echo the golden tones of a Gabriel Orozco canvas on one wall. As usual, Zana shows here that he is interested in the habits of his clients, making these interiors dedicated to their needs.
As in many of Zana’s projects, there are also elegant references to classic French architecture. The master bath features an abundance of Calacatta marble, from the cabinetry, wainscot, tub surround, and floors to the Zana-designed stool; pairs of artworks by Elad Lassry and Walead Beshty hang above the tub.
The beautiful bedroom, with a simple and light color scheme, also features many artworks. The headboard, nightstands, and TV cabinet are all by Atelier Pierre Bonnefille.
Here we see that a the Eric Schmitt console in the entrance hall was sized to fit perfectly under the space’s large Richard Prince text painting, while a deep-red Anish Kapoor sculpture greets visitors.
Charles Zana’s architectural practice creates exceptional spaces all over the world. His interiors are modern and serene, highly structured and richly poetic. That’s why he gives us interior design inspiration.
