New York ranks third in the world for the highest residential real estate prices per square foot so it’s really easy to find luxury penthouses in town, most of them located on the island of Manhattan.
Floor to ceiling windows on the highest levels offering panoramic views of one of the most beautiful urban landscapes in the world. Luxurious kitchens that chefs in the best restaurants in the world would envy. Space galore – we’re talking thousands of square feet, bigger than the average house. If you have a limitless budget, you can snag some pretty insane penthouses in the Big Apple.
In New York City the old industrial areas can become high-end bohemian neighbourhoods, such as Tribeca, now a zone frequented by VIPs and full of trendy restaurants, boutiques and luxury apartments. There are also stylish lofts in SoHo, an old commercial area where warehouses have been converted into residential studios for artists. Also attracting a trendy crowd looking for spacious luxury homes are the neighbourhoods of West Village, Greenwich Village and Little Italy, all of which have a small-town atmosphere and comfortable apartments in characteristic “brownstone” buildings with original fireplaces and large windows. For more classical residential areas it is best to avoid the neighbourhoods that never sleep such as East Village and Midtown (with the exception of Turtle Bay) and concentrate instead on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side. You may find a luxury property in Carnegie Hill or a penthouse with a view over Central Park.
