Art Basel is pleased to announce that it has been given a seven-year contract to produce a new contemporary and modern art fair in the iconic Grand Palais in Paris. This new global effort, slated to debut this October 2022, will forge partnerships with France’s cultural sectors, ranging from fashion and design to cinema and music, to create a big event that will radiate across the city and become deeply rooted in Paris and its cultural environment.

They seek to capitalise on Paris’ unequalled reputation as a worldwide metropolis by assisting in producing a bustling week that will further boost the city’s international resonance as a cultural hub.

Art Basel brings to this initiative its 50-year heritage of establishing the world’s best art shows in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Each edition of Art Basel is distinguished by its host city and location, reflected in the participating galleries, artworks displayed, and parallel programming produced in collaboration with local organisations.

Art Basel Paris, like Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong, will work closely with the city’s museums, private institutions, galleries, and other cultural venues to provide a vibrant cultural programme from dawn to night, all week.

Art Basel Programme

By fusing the tradition of Art Basel with the cultural legacy of Paris, they hope to create a new event that brings together artists, collectors, curators, and gallery owners from all over the world, as well as Parisian cultural players beyond the Grand Palais.

To undertake this ambitious new project for Paris, Art Basel will build a new French organisation and recruit a dedicated team on the ground, interact directly with France’s gallery community and promise them a strong representation in the fair’s Selection Committee.

In addition, Art Basel aims to establish a separate character and brand for the Parisian event. More information about the design fair, such as the composition of the Selection Committee, gallery application deadlines, and event nomenclature, will be made available in the coming weeks.
Vincenzo de Bellis is the new Art Basel’s Director
Vincenzo de Bellis, currently Curator and Associate Director of Programs, Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center, has been selected for the new worldwide role of Director, Fairs and Exhibition Platforms, beginning August 2022, according to Art Basel.

De Bellis will be in charge of the leadership teams for Art Basel’s four exhibits in Basel, Paris, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach, as well as spearheading new events and projects in the physical sphere. De Bellis will report directly to Global Director Marc Spiegler and will play an important role in Art Basel’s future development and expansion into new areas through activities that complement the core business of presenting the world’s major art exhibitions.
