Featured on the AD100 list of the world’s best interior designers and architects, Russell Groves’s work is at once sybaritic and meticulouS, offering a sexy take on modernism: “The dynamic tension produces sophisticated, elegant environments infused with warmth and ease,” says the Manhattan-based architect and designer, whose emphasis on refined materials and innovative finishes owes a debt to the luxe-modern creations of Eileen Gray, Jean-Michel Frank, and Paul Dupré-Lafon.
An alumnus of the studios of Richard Meier and Peter Marino, Groves opened his own firm in 1996, making his mark with high-profile retail spaces like the New York flagship for Coach and a Shanghai outpost for Tiffany & Co. that features a cantilevered blue-box façade. He is currently working on a beach house for Michael Kors, a 200-acre Napa Valley estate, and the 32-story Halcyon apartment tower in Manhattan. As comfortable designing for a suburban family as he is for a global fashion brand, Groves imbues every project with resplendent glamour.
Art collectors and fashion designers alike turn to S. Russell Groves for his smartly tailored, seductively glamorous spaces, which draw inspiration from such diverse sources as serene Japanese architecture and groovy 1960s culture. Design Philosophy: “A meticulous yet sybaritic approach.” Key Influences: Jean-Michel Frank, Carl Auböck.Recent Projects: A waterfront compound for Michael Kors on Long Island and a hilltop estate in Napa, California. New York.
Groves says it was Peter Marino who helped him go forward with something he had always believed—that the divide between architecture and interior design is unnecessary. Meshing the two disciplines continues to inform his deceptively simple designs that frequently give a great sense of volume and space, regardless of the actual dimensions.
