Located just one hour south of Lisbon, Casas na Areia is a beautiful lodge designed by Portugese architect Manuel Aires Mateus. Originally conceived as a weekend retreat for its owners, the guesthouse quickly became a small luxury hotel after receiving much attention for its architecture. One of the most striking features of the house are the internal sand floors that cover the common areas, connecting guests with nature and encouraging a slower pace of life.
Four separate buildings allow the place to be used independently or rented out as a whole – perfect for groups of up to 8 people or families with children. With breakfast and daily housekeeping included in the rates, all that is left to do is unwind. There are stunning white sandy beaches 5 minutes drive away, and the region is host to some wonderful wildlife including flamingos, storks, and dolphins.
The beach sand floor and white Gervasoni Ghost sofas in the living area invites relaxation. The sand floor can be heated in winter.
Four separate houses were built with thatched roofs using local materials harvested on the banks of river Sado – two of wood and reeds, and the other two in white concrete.
Natural stools outside the house to enjoy the sunset.
The bedrooms have concrete floors and minimalist white Corian open plan bathrooms. The white linen fabric curtains and the Gervasoni Ghost beds contrast with the wooden trunks as bed side tables.
Outdoors pool to enjoy even when the see is fierce.
Imagine waking up and having a sea bath in the middle of the night.
