Early this morning, \u00a0architecture get to know that UK\u00a0architect David Adjaye has won this year\u2019s London Design Medal, while industrial designer Kenneth Grange has been given Johnson Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of his career, while Bethan Laura Wood picked up\u00a0Swarovski Emerging Talent Medal. A total of four medal winners were announced this morning at London\u2019s Broadgate as part of the British Land Celebration of Design \u2013 one of the headline\u00a0events of the\u00a0London Design Festival 2016<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Adjaye was awarded the biggest of the four prizes, the Panerai London Design Medal.\u00a0The Tanzanian-born British architect was described by judges \u201can inspiration for the younger generation\u201d.\u00a0His\u00a0projects include the Dirty House in London\u2019s Hackney\u00a0and the Sugar Hill housing block in New York,\u00a0as well as the new\u00a0Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture.<\/p>\n

Adjaye becomes the 10th\u00a0winner of the prize,\u00a0which\u00a0has been awarded annually since 2007 to an individual or group that has demonstrated \u201can outstanding contribution to London and design\u201d.\u00a0He follows past winners footsteps\u00a0\u00a0designers including\u00a0Peter Saville,\u00a0Zaha Hadid,\u00a0Paul Smith and\u00a0Thomas Heatherwick.<\/p>\n

After graduating, Wood set out on a path that has seen her undertake residencies with London\u2019s Design Museum and W Hotel Mexico City, as well as collaborating with artisanal producers on predominantly limited series or batch-manufactured objects that utilise materials as diverse as wood laminate, hand-blown glass and appliqu\u00e9 upholstery.<\/p>\n

Celebrating entrepreneurship, the Airbnb Design Innovation Medal champions individuals whose buisiness development and success lies in outstanding design. Studio Roosegaarde, the social design lab of Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, explores the interaction between people, technology and space, most notably with his Smog Free Project, which saw him create the world\u2019s largest smog vacuum cleaner and thus this notable prize.<\/p>\n
