A path of narrow\u00a0brass<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0lines<\/em><\/strong><\/a> leads visitors around the different areas of this restaurant\u00a0in Munich, which is set inside an important Modernist building<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

When designing the interior for\u00a0Herzog Bar & Restaurant M\u00fcnchen<\/a>,\u00a0Build Inc Architects\u00a0aimed to reference its Modernist<\/a><\/strong><\/em> setting while creating a contemporary space.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the most prominent challenges was working with a revered heritage-listed building. We wanted to respect and highlight it on one side, and on the other side try to meet the high standard and quality of gastronomic spaces in our contemporary world,\u201d sad the architects.<\/p>\n

Based in Zurich, Build Inc<\/a><\/strong> is led by architect\u00a0\u00d6zg\u00fcr Keles. The studio specializes in unique restaurant interiors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Herzog Bar & Restaurant M\u00fcnchen is located inside the New Maxburg \u2013 a post-war Modernist building designed by architects Sep Ruf and Theo Pabst in 1957 to replace the 16th-century Maxburg castle that was demolished in the second world war. It is one of a small number of protected Modernist building in the city.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, the Swiss architects chose modern-looking materials to create design elements that would \u201creinterpret\u201d the building\u2019s existing features.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis space truly adopts the periodical virtues and ideologies, where clear and functional forms were revived in turn opposing the former and more abundant decorative gestures\u00a0now protected throughout Munich,\u201d said the architects.<\/p>\n

A set of brass strips running along the floor and up the walls is intended to guide visitors through the space.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese brass lines finally join beyond the bar only to spread out and form the lighting bodies illuminating the entire space in gentle pools of ambiance,\u201d said the architects.<\/p>\n

The same material is also used to create branch-like lighting fixtures in front of the large windows, and to provide a frame for the sofas in the lounge area.<\/p>\n

Brass has been back in favour recently thanks to its\u00a0\u201cnostalgic comfort\u201d, according to British designer Tom Dixon<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the Herzog Bar, the brass elements<\/strong> stand out against the columns, walls, bar and ceiling, which are all painted black. Textured concrete was used for the flooring to reference the terrazzo floors elsewhere in the building.<\/p>\n
