Set within the elegant confines of 44 Great Russell Street \u2013 opposite the British Museum \u2013 Plinth<\/strong><\/em> is a store-cum-gallery<\/strong> <\/em>conceived by Chloe Grimshaw<\/strong><\/em> and Paul Franklin<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"plinth\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Open for business until 19 March, Plinth<\/strong> <\/em>is an innovative new store-cum-gallery<\/strong><\/em> space located in Bloomsbury<\/strong><\/em>.
\nThe initiative was conceived by co-founders Chloe Grimshaw<\/strong><\/em> and Paul Franklin<\/strong><\/em> as a means of presenting a carefully curated selection of design<\/strong><\/em>, homeware, original work and new editions by a range of artists and makers.<\/p>\n

Plinth\u2019s offering sees affordable products juxtaposed with design classics<\/strong><\/em> and work by celebrated artists, many of which are designed for a domestic setting; Yinka Shonibare\u2019s intricately illustrated crockery, Julian Opie\u2019s \u2018Sheep\u2019 blanket and a candle \u2013 \u2018redolent of libraries and woodsmoke\u2019 \u2013 by Perfumer H\u2019s Lyn Harris sit alongside silk scarves by the lauded Chinese abstract artist Ding Yi and a striking monochromatic umbrella by art-focussed fashion design<\/strong> <\/em>Duro Olowu.\"04\"<\/a><\/p>\n

If the superlative selection of wares wasn\u2019t enough, Grimshaw and Franklin have also painstakingly filled the space with candles, flowers \u2013\u00a0supplied by F.Bombe \u2013\u00a0and vintage furniture<\/strong><\/em> by the likes of Arne Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a strangely inviting space that fuses ramshackle with something altogether more \u2018haute\u2019, without ever teetering into pretentiousness \u2026 in fact, its a space designed to promote a spirit of openness. \u2018It should be a place where people come to speak about art and relax\u2019 explains Ikon director Jonathan Watkins.<\/p>\n

The space will play host to a programme of events, conversations and workshops. Editions come in all forms \u2014 prints; ceramics; objets d\u2019art; umbrellas; \u2014 and everything (display cabinets and all) is available to be purchased!<\/p>\n

\u2018Plinth<\/strong><\/em> is not only about providing a new platform for unique artist-designed products<\/strong><\/em> and limited editions,\u2019 say the founders of the initiave. \u2018It\u2019s a project centered on a spirit of openness, and creating a means by which a wider audience can access and own contemporary art<\/strong><\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n
