Designer Ron Arad<\/strong> has revealed plans to build a cancer treatment centre\u00a0that will serve Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Druze communities in both Israel and Palestine.<\/p>\n

Located at the Ha-Emek Medical Centre in northern Israel, the facility will for the first time offer specialist cancer treatment for the residents of West Bank conflict zones, which includes the cities of Jenin and Nablus.<\/p>\n

London-based Ron Arad Architect<\/strong><\/em>s envisions the 11,000-square-metre building as a three-storey tiered structure\u00a0that follows the slope of the terrain, creating a series of indoor and outdoor spaces for patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe joy and the rewards of engaging in the design of a hospital are huge,\u201d explained Ron Arad<\/em>, who was born in Tel Aviv and was also the designer of\u00a0Israel\u2019s first design museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that the objectives and aims are very clear \u2013\u00a0the well-being of the patients, and of course staff \u2013 doesn\u2019t lead you to compromise any of the architectural and visual values,\u201d Ron Arad<\/em> said.\u00a0\u201cOn the contrary, it enhances it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The building will be\u00a0named\u00a0Beit Shulamit, or\u00a0Shulamit House, after the late\u00a0paediatrician and philanthropist Shulamit Katzman \u2013\u00a0in recognition of a large donation made to the project by\u00a0the Katzman Family Foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn naming the project Beit Shulamit, I sought to make the hospital a more inviting, less daunting prospect for patients and their families, and to invoke the warmth, charisma and personality of Shulamit Katzman, who I had the pleasure of meeting a few years ago,\u201d added Arad.<\/p>\n

Ron Arad<\/em> Architects is partnering with local firm\u00a0Mochly-Eldar Architects on the project. It will include a\u00a0radiation therapy institute, a breast cancer care centre, a paediatric oncology department, a wellbeing centre, infusion therapy, ambulatory clinics and a research institute led by Nobel laureate\u00a0Aaron Ciechanover.<\/p>\n

It will be situated to the east of the hospital campus\u2019 perimeter road, nestled into the landscape in\u00a0the foothills of the\u00a0Giv\u2019at Hamor\u00e9 mountain. Underground tunnels will connect it with other parts of the hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a particular, singular challenge in successfully marrying the technological and clinical advances being offered to cancer patients now and in the near future with architectural qualities that celebrate continuity, promote wellbeing, and encourage patients and staff alike along what is one of life\u2019s most difficult journeys,\u201d\u00a0said Asa Bruno,\u00a0director of Arad\u2019s studio<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is no easy feat in a sector in which, understandably, the pragmatic mechanisms of healthcare provision more often than not tend to override many of these non-clinical considerations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The project will be\u00a0formally launched at a gala event taking place this weekend at the\u00a0Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n

Ron Arad<\/strong><\/em> trained as an architect at the Architectural Association in London, but moved into design after discovering a Rover car seat in a local scrapyard and transforming into the iconic Rover Chair. His recent projects include a mattress-like sofa and a colour-changing workstation.<\/p>\n
