It\u2019s that time of year again, when you\u00a0drag home\u00a0a tree, unwrap your ornaments, and schlep to the store to buy replacement bulbs for the lights that mysteriously broke over the summer. It\u2019s a hassle, but it\u2019s nothing compared with\u00a0what\u2019s gone into the construction of some of the most extravagant Christmas trees on the planet. These are not meant for strings of popcorn: These are works of art\u00a0elaborate enough to make Santa weep. (Tears of joy, of course.)<\/p>\n

From San Diego\u00a0to New York, to London, to Paris, we\u2019ve rounded up some of the most expensive, luxurious trees of the season. None may have cost $11 million like that one that one year in Abu Dhabi, but hey, we still think they\u2019re nice.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York<\/h2>\n

\"THE<\/a><\/p>\n

Fittingly, the Met\u2019s 20-foot tall blue spruce tree is decked out with priceless historical objects, including a collection of 18th-century Neopolitan angels and cherubs scattered through its boughs.\u00a0There\u2019s also a group of\u00a0(uncannily) realistic\u00a0cr\u00e8che figures that\u00a0flank the nativity scene.<\/p>\n

Claridge\u2019s, London<\/h2>\n

\"THE<\/a><\/p>\n

Given that so many little boys and girls are going to find a Burberry scarf under the tree this year, it\u2019s appropriate that Claridge\u2019s (certainly untraditional) tree was designed this year by Christopher Bailey, the chief creative and chief executive officer of Burberry. It\u2019s the sixth year the iconic Mayfair\u00a0hotel has teamed\u00a0with a designer; Dolce & Gabanna, Lanvin\u2019s Alber Elbaz, and John\u00a0Galliano\u00a0have all had a turn in the past. No need to squint: Those are, in fact, almost 100 gold and silver umbrellas. Someone is planning for a not-so-white Christmas.<\/p>\n

Bonus:<\/strong> At sister hotel the Connaught, artist Damien Hirst was enlisted to decorate the property\u2019s inaugural outdoor tree. He\u2019s made made ornaments, fittingly odd, from medical instruments and pills and has strung garlands of sausages on the\u00a030-foot Norway spruce.<\/p>\n

The Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris<\/h2>\n

Not quite a tree and more specifically a forest of trees, the George V\u2019s holiday installation, euphemistically called Arctic Fantasy and created by their artistic director Jeff Leatham, is really a foil to the main attraction in the hotel\u2019s marble courtyard,\u00a0two giant polar bears made out of mirror. (Inside, penguins made of a similar material bring a surreal touch to the hotel\u2019s elaborate lobby.)<\/p>\n

The Hotel del Coronado, San Diego<\/h2>\n

\"THE<\/a><\/p>\n

For everyone who doesn\u2019t live in Southern California, it seems vaguely unfair that they get to enjoy palm trees\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>evergreens, but the world is not a fair place, as any disappointed child will tell you on Christmas morning. Thus the Hotel del Coronado in perennially sunny San Diego has a 21-foot-tall lobby tree inspired by the graphic artist Jeff Granito\u2019s folksy (and disingenuously, wintery) picture of the hotel.<\/p>\n

The Victoria &\u00a0Albert Museum, London<\/h2>\n

\"THE<\/a><\/p>\n

In a departure from the usual weak gestures toward\u00a0other religions during the holiday season (nothing so bleak as a small plastic menorah next to a 35-foot-tall spruce, blazing with light), the V&A has gone the extra mile with\u00a0Kalpataru: The Wishing Tree <\/em>by Delhi-based designers\u00a0Sarthak Sengupta and Sahil Bagga. It\u2019s a colorful ensemble of free-standing structures (in a tree-light arrangement) handcrafted of beaten brass and painted with classic Indian motifs by artists from Kerala.<\/p>\n

The American Museum of Natural History, New York<\/h2>\n

\"THE<\/a><\/p>\n

Unless you have a whole lot of free time, don\u2019t even think of trying this at home. The AMNH\u2019s annual Origami Holiday tree contains more than 1,000\u00a0pieces of origami artfrom volunteers (and professionals, don\u2019t feel too bad about yourself) all over the 13-foot tree\u2019s boughs. The theme this year, \u201cMighty and Microscopic Life,\u201d was\u00a0inspired by the upcoming exhibitions\u00a0The Secret World Inside You\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Dinosaurs Among Us, as well as the current exhibition\u00a0Life at the Limits: Stories of Amazing Species, so you can spy\u00a0everything from pterosaurs, to kangaroos, to\u00a0little blobby bacterium.<\/p>\n

Le Royal Monceau \u2013\u00a0Raffles, Paris<\/h2>\n

This one\u2019s so fancy it even has a name and a backstory: \u201cThe Lightning Tree,\u201d designed by Didier Faustino, was inspired by a plane journey through stormy weather and, in a somewhat surprising twist, the hyper-austere lightning field by Walter de Maria. The \u201ctree\u201d is four separate sculptures under a neon light fixture whose negative space forms a tree shape as you walk around it. It\u2019s also available in chocolate form.<\/p>\n

The Designers\u2019 Christmas Trees, Paris<\/h2>\n

For the past 20 years, the charity\u00a0Les Sapins de No\u00ebl des Cr\u00e9ateurs,\u00a0<\/em>conceived and run by the French journalist and TV personality\u00a0Marie-Christiane Marek, enlists designers to create an elaborate version of a christmas tree that\u2019s\u00a0then auctioned off to help the fight against cancer. This year\u2019s auction was on Nov. 23, and designers included the fashion houses Chanel and Christian Dior, the designers Nina Ricci and Jean-Paul Gaultier, and even Pierre Herm\u00e9, whose chain of superhigh-end macarons are the not-at-all-best-kept secret of Paris.<\/p>\n
