Architecture News<\/a>:<\/strong><\/em> Apple has tasked London architecture-based Foster + Partners<\/strong> <\/a>(F+P) with designing a new flagship along North Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The Apple Store will replace the existing Chicago flagship\u2014a four-story development that debuted in 2003.\u00a0The new store\u2019s riverfront location was chosen with the goal of increasing visibility and sales. Locally known as Pioneer Court, the site is regarded for its publicly displayed sculptures.<\/p>\n

Though actual plans have yet to be released, a report from the city\u2019s Department of Planning and Development reveals a 20,000-square-foot retail outlet, which will occupy an office building\u2019s former food court. Patrons will enter the glass-fronted store\u2019s 14-foot-high entry pavilion via stairs that link the street to the Chicago River\u2019s north bank.<\/p>\n

\"Architecture<\/a><\/p>\n

This street-level pavilion will feature a thin roof with high-strength carbon-fiber reinforcement that aims to reduce cooling loads during the year\u2019s hottest months. Patrons will have the option of using either two staircases or an elevator to access the subterranean sales floor.<\/p>\n

\"New<\/a><\/p>\n

With glass walls that rise 32 feet above the riverwalk, the store\u2019s exterior will deviate from the company\u2019s previously unveiled retails outlets, which typically feature cubic glass box facades. This location will instead reference the iconic Midwestern Prairie-style designs of Frank Lloyd Wright.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to begin next year.\u2028\u2028\u00a0F+P was also responsible for Apple\u2019s Cupertino, California headquarters, which is currently under construction.<\/p>\n
