Architecture Breaking News<\/strong><\/a>!!! The most famous Antonio Gaudi project, and the strongest of his architecture portfolio, The\u00a0Sagrada Fam\u00edlia church has entered its final stage of construction, over 100 years since its foundation stone was laid and\u00a090 years after its designer Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi died.\u00a0Six new\u00a0towers will be added to the Roman Catholic basilica\u00a0in Barcelona, completing work that was begun by Gaudi in 1882. The tallest of the six spires, the\u00a0Tower of Jesus Christ will measure over 172 metres and make the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia the tallest religious building in Europe.<\/p>\n

Chief architect Jordi Fauli said the structure is on track to complete in 2026\u00a0to coincide with the centenary of Gaudi\u2019s\u00a0death.\u00a0\u201cThe central tower of 172.5 meters will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because the tallest tower in Europe is Ulm, at 162 meters,\u201d Fauli told press during a conference in Barcelona on 21 October.<\/p>\n

However, the\u00a0architect\u00a0said elements of\u00a0decoration could take a further four to six years to finish.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to predict but we can say that it will be completed by 2030, 2032,\u201d he said.\u00a0Only one facade of the basilica\u00a0was finished when Gaudi died in a trolley accident in 1926, and until 15 years ago the structure was missing part of its roof.\u00a0The building is now in its 133th year and is approximately\u00a070 per cent finished.<\/p>\n

Once complete, it\u00a0will feature eighteen towers dedicated to religious figures including the Virgin Mary and the four evangelists \u2013 Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Their varying heights are designed to reflect their hierarchy.\u00a0The tallest of the six spires, the Tower of Jesus Christ, will be topped by a cross and rise directly above a\u00a0chamber that was designed to\u00a0support its weight and funnel sunlight into the church.<\/p>\n

Work has just completed on the chamber, which is located 60 metres above the floor of the church and gives visitors greater proximity to the building\u2019s brightly coloured stained-glass windows and ornamental arched ceilings.\u00a0Intricately carved tree-like columns support the tall ceilings, while the church\u2019s highly decorated outer facades depict the life and teachings of Jesus.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Sagrada Familia Foundation\u00a0released an animation of the building under different stages of construction in 2013.\u00a0The project\u2019s annual construction budget of\u00a0\u20ac25 million\u00a0(\u00a318 million) is supplemented by\u00a0visitor entrance frees, which range between \u20ac15-20 (\u00a310-15).\u00a0Earlier this year, it was announced that a chapel originally designed by Antoni Gaud\u00ed for the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia would be constructed in Chile. It is expected to be the first Antonio Gaudi projects\u00a0completed, outside Spain.
