Vietnamese firm Vo Trong Nghia Architects <\/a>has unveiled designs for a verdant\u00a0university campus in Ho Chi Minh City, featuring tree-covered rooftops, balconies and a plant-filled\u00a0courtyard.<\/p>\n

The FPT University campus will occupy a 22,500-square-metre site among the skyscrapers of the southern Vietnamese city. It is Vo Trong Nghia Architects\u2019 second project for the technology college, following another campus underway near Hanoi.<\/p>\n

Pockets of planting will be\u00a0dispersed throughout the staggered floors of the building, framing\u00a0the expansive courtyard at its centre.\u00a0The number of floors will increase towards the corners of the plot and fall in the flanks to create a gently undulating outline that counters the city\u2019s typically vertical\u00a0blocks.<\/p>\n

The architects claim\u00a0the greenery will\u00a0provide\u00a0shade and improve air quality,\u00a0reducing the campus\u2019 reliance on air conditioning.\u00a0They expect\u00a0these semi-outdoor\u00a0spaces to\u00a0provide meeting, lunching and events areas for some of the\u00a05,000 students that can\u00a0occupy the campus at any one time.<\/p>\n

Vertical gardens are proving a popular way to offset energy consumption and fit more green space into densely populated cities around the world. Beijing firm Penda recently released visuals of its\u00a0leafy housing scheme in\u00a0Vijayawada, India, while a pair of skyscrapers <\/a>in\u00a0Milan by\u00a0Boeri Studio feature one\u00a0hectare of planting.<\/p>\n
