Leroy Street Studio<\/em> is an architectural firm<\/em> interested in pursuing intensive research into local building techniques, systems and materials, as well as rigorously examining the physical, social, and environmental context. The architects\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>derive architecture <\/strong><\/a>through a synthesis of diverse forces that allow us to create a unique design for each client, informed by their requirements and desires. Leroy Street Studio was founded by Morgan Hare and Marc Turkel in 1995. Shawn Watts joined the practice in 1997 and became a partner in 2005.<\/p>\n

Shore house Northaven New York: <\/strong>this house, designed for both entertaining and as a private retreat, is embedded into the topography of its waterfront site. Emerging through the forest upon approach, the charred-cedar fa\u00e7ade does not reveal the public functions below grade.

After descending through a cut in the earth visitors discover a series of sunken glassy courtyards that open to sweeping views. Large glass panels slide to create a continuous flowing space.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The singular black volume, containing bedrooms and a quiet reading space, shelters and defines these gathering spaces.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The center of the house is a large masonry hearth that supports the roof above and provides a focal point for a sunken seating area.<\/p>\n

Pond House East Hampton New York:<\/strong> in response to a long narrow site, this house\u2019s discrete forms were placed and connected to create intimate spaces and unexpected connections to the surrounding garden and distant views.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Aesthetic restrictions imposed through a covenant requiring a traditional building inspired the project\u2019s design, which subverts traditional massing with modern insertions and detailing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

LSS organized the house for multi-generational use by dramatically linking discrete living spaces for different age groups to central family spaces.<\/p>\n

Cove House Woods Hole MA:<\/strong> the simple form of this house responds to the harsh marine climate and the raw beauty of the site. Elevated on timber piles, the house hovers over the delicate wetlands and allows floodwaters to pass beneath.

Due to the desire to preserve views and not overwhelm a sensitive site, the volume of the home was broken up into three smaller masses.
\n<\/p>\n

The two larger masses are partially buried into the hillside and connected by an underground tunnel which serves as a library.

Cube house Westhampton Beach, New York:<\/strong>\u00a0within the taut cedar-clad volume LSS worked with the client to create both intimate spaces for retreat and privacy, as well as dynamic spaces for group activity.

The resulting split section allows natural light into the center of the house while creating many levels, each with framed views of the wetlands and bay beyond.<\/p>\n
