Schr\u00f6der House, Ultrech \u2013 Built in 1924 by Gerrit Rietveld<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Schr\u00f6der House looks like a painting that came to life. Traditional ideas of construction and enclosure, outside and inside are not present: instead we can find lines and splashes of color. These traits can also be found in furniture that Rietveld designed, pointing to the synthesis that he and his Dutch contemporaries realized through the short-lived\u00a0De Stijl\u00a0(\u201cthe style\u201d) movement.<\/p>\n

Lovell Beach House, California \u2013 Built in 1926 by Rudolph M. Schindler<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is the third residence that R.M. Schindler has designed for Philip Lovell. The Lovell Beach House is raised on five sculptural columns to gain ocean views over neighboring buildings. The bravado structure also seeks to protect the house from earthquakes (in fact it has already survived one five years after its completion, one that destroyed a nearby school)<\/p>\n

Frederick C. Robie House, Chicago \u2013 Built in 1909 by Frank Lloyd Wright<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What was a.mazing about Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s genius was the need to constantly reinvent himself and his architecture. The Robie House can be seen as the apotheosis of his Prairie style, which he started to develop in the end of the 19th century. This building is so iconi that is part of a\u00a0U.S. National Historic Landmark.<\/p>\n

Villa Savoye, Poissy (France) \u2013 Built in 1931 by Le Corbusier<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This house near Paris for Pierre and Emilie Savoye has become one of modern architecture\u2019s key icons, residential or otherwise. It encapsulates Le Corbusier\u2019s five points that he developed in the 1920s: raising the building on\u00a0pilotis<\/i>(slender columns), a free facade independent of the structural system, ribbon windows based on a similar logic, an open floor plan, and a roof garden that regained the ground lost through the building\u2019s occupation of the landscape.<\/p>\n

Villa Mairea, Noormarkku, Finland \u2013 Built in 1939 by Alvar Aalto<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s\u00a0Fallingwater, strove for a design that was Finnish but modern. The outcome is a L-shaped house in an idiosyncratic design that can be described as \u201cthe other tradition of modern architecture,\u201d which placed humanism above ideology.<\/p>\n

Gropius House, Massachusetts \u2013 Built in1937 by Walter Gropius<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Walter Gropius emigrated to the United States in 1937. He was a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in\u00a0Cambridge, Massachusetts, and designed the Gropius House for his family in nearby Lincoln. Its ribbon windows\u00a0and white surfaces express a Bauhaus aesthetic, but underneath strong regional influences can be found.<\/p>\n

Eames House, Case Study House No. 8, Pacific Palisades, California \u2013 Built in 1949 by Charles and Ray Eames<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although this house\/studio might seem simply two rectangular volumes made of off-the-shelf steel structures and windows, in fact, it is much more than that: it is a colorful expression of the architect\u2019s design sensibility and a suitable backdrop for their collections and creations.<\/p>\n

Glass House, Connecticut \u2013 Built in 1949 by Philip Johnson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Philip Johnson and Henry Russell Hitchcock, in their 1932\u00a0International Style\u00a0<\/i>of Modern Architecture<\/i>\u00a0exhibition at MoMA, helped to define what people thought modern architecture was. The Glass House is the first of many structures Johnson designed and built on his New Canaan estate.<\/p>\n

Gamble House in Pasadena, California \u2013 Built in 1908 by Greene and Greene<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This house is a masterpiece since it features all Greene brothers\u2019 styles\u00a0 \u2014 Arts and Crafts, art nouveau, Japanese\u00a0timber construction, bungalows. Even though the house appears in the 1980s science fiction movie Back to the Future,<\/i>\u00a0its biggest merit lies on its well-crafted wood architecture, inside and out.<\/p>\n

Farnsworth House, Illinois \u2013 Built in 1951 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mies van der Rohe emigrated to the United States before World War II and studied in Illinois (then Armour) Institute of Technology. His influence on postwar architecture is massive, mostly on the\u00a0design of office\u00a0towers and other urban buildings. He designed a raised glass box that turned out to be his last residential commission for Edith Farnsworth.<\/p>\n\n \"product<\/a>\n
