The Storefront Theater by Matthew Mazzotta \u2013 Winner of architecture project of the year and Rebirth Project of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Matthew Mazzotta<\/strong> installed the open-air event space,\u00a0which flips down from an unassuming abandoned freestanding storefront.\u00a0The Storefront Theatre<\/strong> can be hidden away and disguised at part of the streetscape when not in use. The aim of the project is to help bring life back to downtown Lyons, that has a population of 851. Locals donated money and volunteered their time to help to construct the theatre. Since the venue was installed, it has hosted events including movie screenings, video-game nights and music concerts.<\/p>\n

House in Miyamoto by Tato Architects \u2013 Winner of House of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

House in Miyamoto<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The house is just one room containing angular platforms that perform multiple functions and are connected solely throught a spiralling sequence of wooden steps. This was done to the client\u2019s need for a space where the family could feel closer to each other.\u00a0Tato Architects<\/strong> was founded in 1997 and works all over Japan, mainly in private houses. In recent years, the firm has been assigned to do interior and installations as well.<\/p>\n

\n\"Dezeen<\/a>

Dongziguan Affordable Housing by Gad Line+ Studio \u2013 Winner of Housing Project of the Year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This residential\u00a0development was designed by Gad Line+ Studio<\/strong> to provide\u00a0affordable high-quality\u00a0low-cost housing.\u00a0<\/span>They did it as a response to the poor living conditions that affect many rural communities in\u00a0China. Using forms and materials that are inspired by the region\u2019s architecture, the\u00a0housing project located in Dongziguan Village features sloping tiled roofs and a\u00a0courtyard typology.<\/p>\n

AmorePacific headquarters Seoul by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin \u2013 Winner of Tall Building of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Korea\u2019s largest beauty company AmorePacific<\/strong>\u2018s new headquarters has been designed by\u00a0David Chipperfield Architects<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span>The building is punctuated with voids and filled with trees and pools. The 30-storey building located\u00a0in the centre of\u00a0Seoul\u00a0has been carefully developed around a central\u00a0courtyard\u00a0to maximise natural ventilation and daylight. It\u00a0is intended to show the beauty company\u2019s ambitions as a modern company,\u00a0mediating between local and global, private and public, collective and individual.<\/p>\n

Bamboo Sports Hall by Chiangmai Life Architects \u2013 Winner of Civic and Cultural Building of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This school sports hall in Chiang Mai,\u00a0Thailand, was built by local bamboo specialists\u00a0Chiangmai Life Architects<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span>Modelled on the petals of a lotus flower and constructed solely on bamboo, the\u00a0zero-carbon sports hall is in keeping with the school\u2019s \u201cgreen\u201d. The intricate bamboo structure is left exposed throughout the interior and used to create arched openings around the edge of the hall. The 782-square-metre sports hall is conceived to hold about 300 students and hosts basketball, volleyball, badminton and futsal. The Bamboo Sports Hall<\/strong> has\u00a0courts, a stage, a storage room and balconies for visitors to observe sporting events or shows.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg by Foster + Partners \u2013 Winner of Business Building of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bloomberg\u2019s<\/strong> headquarters\u2019 in\u00a0London\u00a0claims to be the world\u2019s most\u00a0sustainable\u00a0office building.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>British firm\u00a0Foster + Partners<\/strong>\u00a0designed the building. Bloomberg\u2019s headquarters is a symbol of sustainability, with the highest design stage score of any major office development.<\/p>\n

\n\"Dezeen<\/a>

Maggie\u2019s Centre Barts by Steven Holl Architects \u2013 Winner of Hospitality Building of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maggie\u2019s Centre Barts<\/strong> was designed by\u00a0Steven Holl Architects<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0Maggie\u2019s, an organisation that provides support to cancer patients and their families.\u00a0<\/span>With a facade of translucent white glass dotted with coloured panels, the three-storey building in\u00a0London\u00a0features a concrete frame, a layer of perforated bamboo and a skin of matt glass.\u00a0The centre is located at\u00a0St Bartholomew\u2019s Hospital, the\u00a0oldest hospital in Britain.<\/p>\n

Okana Centre for Change by Laura Katharina Straehle and Ellen Rouwendal \u2013\u00a0Winner of Small Building of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Okana Centre for Change<\/strong> is a\u00a0pavilion\u00a0structure in\u00a0Kenya\u00a0designed for public use.\u00a0<\/span>The project was delivered by Laura Katharina Straehle and Ellen Rouwendal<\/strong> in collaboration with locals, workers and international\u00a0students. This was made possible through low-tech solutions and an easily understandable design process. The building, which contains community spaces, ICT rooms, a library, tailoring workshop and bakery, took 2 years to be finished.<\/p>\n

Lascaux International Centre for Cave Art by Casson Mann \u2013 Winner of Civic and Cultural Interior and Interior Project of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Casson Mann<\/strong> designed the interior of the Lascaux International Centre for Cave Art<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span>The goal was to recreate the experience of the Lascaux Caves, where prehistoric paintings were discovered in 1940.\u00a0The team used advanced 3D laser scanning and casting techniques to achieve accurate resin replicas of sections of the\u00a0caves. 25 artists hand-painted 900 metres of faux cave,\u00a0using the same pigments as those used by the prehistoric painters to recreate almost 2,000\u00a0artworks. Casson Mann created an entire experience for the new attraction in France, using\u00a0interactive technology to interpret the palaeolithic painted cave. They also designed\u00a0a sequence of interpretative galleries and a handheld multimedia guide for the Lascaux International Centre for Cave Art. No wonder this project won twice in the Dezeen Awards.<\/p>\n

Captain Kelly\u2019s Cottage by John Wardle Architects \u2013 Winner of Civic and Cultural Interior and Interior Project of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Captain Kelly\u2019s Cottage<\/strong>\u00a0is a restoration of the original weatherboard cottage on a bay of Bruny Island in Tasmania, built\u00a0 in the 1830\u2019s. The original cottage was constituted by two structures: bedrooms and kitchen, surrounded by a wide verandah.\u00a0A new living area has been built between these structures. The original verandah was one of the main inspirations for the restoration.\u00a0John Wardle Architects<\/strong>\u00a0has a diverse team of architects and interiors designers that work across Australia and internationally from their office in Melbourne. Their works ranges across education, residential and commercial projects.<\/p>\n

Hidden tints by Note Design Studio \u2013 Winner of Residential Interior of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Note Design Studio<\/strong> used shades of yellow, green and pink\u00a0when transforming this old\u00a0Stockholm\u00a0office into a home.\u00a0<\/span>Over a century old, the 200-square-metre property was previously the head office of a fashion brand.\u00a0Instead of opting for the Scandinavian minimalism of many contemporary\u00a0renovations, the designers chose to create a colour palette based on some of the tones\u00a0already there. They then applied these pastel hues\u00a0to walls, mouldings, and door and window frames. These old traits and peculiarities helped to transform the white office space into a contemporary space. The result is a rich colour experience, making Hidden tints<\/strong> an example of splendid design.<\/p>\n

Lokal by SPACE10 and Spacon & X \u2013 Winner of Hospitality Interior of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Space10<\/strong>\u00a0worked with interior design studio\u00a0Spacon & X<\/strong>\u00a0to create the space: Lokal<\/strong>, a new food project that aims to provide a sustainable way for people to grow their own food.\u00a0Lokal showcases an alternative to our conventional supply chain by using biology, engineering and design principles to reduce food miles and our pressure on the environment.<\/p>\n

Studios Office with a Patio by Shogo Onodera and Tsukasa Okada \u2013 Winner of Workspace Interior of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Office with a Patio<\/strong>\u00a0bring teams together in one space, in order to increase communication and\u00a0co-working.\u00a0<\/span>The multifunctional workspace in\u00a0Tokyo\u00a0designed by Shogo Onodera\u00a0and\u00a0Tsukasa Okada<\/strong>\u00a0aims to encourage active discussions between employees, in the hope that it would bring benefits to the company as a whole.<\/p>\n

London Spa by Richard Bell Architecture \u2013 Winners of Health and Wellness Interior of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Richard Bell Architecture<\/strong> designed this subterranean\u00a0spa\u00a0under a home in west London.\u00a0<\/span>London Spa<\/strong>, features monolithic white blocks and handmade\u00a0bricks.\u00a0It also has a sauna, a steam room, a gym and a changing area.<\/p>\n

Bake Cheese Tart Abeno Harukas Shop by Yagyug Douguten \u2013 Winner of Retail Interior of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This Bake Cheese Tart<\/strong> shop is located in a downtown area of Osaka. Designer Fumitaka Suzuki of Yagyug Douguten<\/strong> has used hard and industrial plating in this shop interior to contrast against the product sold inside, the cheese tart. Fumitaka Suzuki aimed to create a \u201cpleasant mismatch\u201d, in the hope of triggering interest to the region as well as the product.<\/p>\n

The Lookout by Note Design Studio \u2013 Winner of Small Interior of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Note Design Studio<\/strong> designed The Lookout<\/strong> for\u00a0Stockholm Furniture Fair\u00a02018 to reveal the design potentials of flooring. The idea was to\u00a0show the design potentials of flooring, creating an innovative and welcoming space to explore.\u00a0The colour palette, combination of materials, colours and shapes were all chosen with the intention to demonstrate the possibilities of flooring materials.<\/p>\n

Windvogel by Studio Roosegaarde \u2013 Windvogel by Studio Roosegaarde<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Windvogel<\/strong> are\u00a0smart kites designed by\u00a0Studio Roosegarde<\/strong>\u00a0that create green energy as they twist in the wind.\u00a0<\/span>They have the potential to create up to 100 kilowatts of green energy and the string of the kites are luminous, meaning they glow in the dark. The main goal was to bring 3 things together: green energy, art and landscape design. One of the most innovative projects present among the Dezeen Awards nominees.<\/p>\n

Kumo Modular Sofa by Anderssen & Voll for Hem \u2013 Winner: Furniture Design of the Year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Kumo Sofa<\/strong> is a ship-smart modular system designed by Norwegian studio\u00a0Anderssen & Voll\u00a0for Hem<\/strong>. This modular sofa that can be shipped in standard boxes. Based on a single module, Kumo is available with up to four seats and arrives as a series of constructed pieces, which can be simply slotted together in a row or corner configuration. The Kumo Sofa is available in three texture-rich woolen fabrics \u2013 mare, graphite and porcelain \u2013 as well as an\u00a0ultra-soft tan leather. The sofa offers flexibility with an innovative frame and cushion construction allowing components to easily be added, removed or rearranged as living circumstances change.<\/p>\n
